Shopping for Babies

It is common wisdom that babies are expensive, or is it? There is no doubt there are things you do need to buy for babies, but in my experience babies really aren't as expensive as common knowledge would have you believe.

There are lots of ways to minimize the impact babies have on your finances; buying second hand, using cloth diapers and breastfeeding would be at the top of my list. Perhaps at a later time I will go into those areas and more in detail. For now, let me give two pieces of advice especially for those expecting their first child:

1. Let someone whose been there help you decide what you need.
There are so many items out there promising to make your baby smart and happy, and to make your life easier. It is easy to quickly believe you "need" them all. You don't. Take a like minded friend or relative who has young children with you to the store. Walk through the aisles and ask her what things she found to be worthwhile and what were not. For instance I would tell you a bouncy seat is a must have. It worked wonders with all my kids. A swing? Not so much. Worked great with one of my kids, but the rest weren't so thrilled. That doesn't mean swing wouldn't be great for your baby, but I'd suggest borrowing one before you buy.

2. Do not buy anything until after your showers.
Your family and friends will want to buy you things for this baby. Let them buy the things you need. Don't be afraid to tell them what you need. If you don't you may end up with 20 newborn sized outfits or receiving blankets.

If you do need to buy something a great place to shop online is ShopWiki-Babies and Toddlers. I only recently found this site, and just love the concept. You search for the type of product that you want, say for instance, bouncy seats. Many types of seats are brought up, and you can narrow the search by price, brand or even color. There are buying guides available to help you make your decision. Pick one you are interested in and see reviews of the product and several stores where you can purchase online. You can even access eBay auctions for the item. Comparison shopping made easy. They even have a nice selection of cloth diapers.

Do watch though when shopping for baby items online that you are getting things for real babies not dolls!

Babies don't have to be expensive. Don't buy things you don't need, try to buy second hand when you can, and be sure to comparison shop before you buy.

Can you guess which of my sweet babies that picture is of?
