Winter Comes Too Soon

Winter has come early this year. It is not uncommon for us to have some snow flurries this time of year, but we had a real, sled riding worthy, snow this week. It mostly melted in the afternoon sun, but the night temperatures have been in the teens, and some of the snow still remains.

We weren't ready for this. The early and unexpected cold sent us into a flurry of winter preparations this week. I still have beets in the ground, but they will hold until it warms next week.

I'm not a big fan of winter, but there are a few things about winter that I really enjoy. The comfort foods of winter are some of my favorites; soups and cornbread, and lots of home baked goods. Though I do not do it near enough, I enjoy playing in the snow with the kids. And of course, warming up by the fire afterward with a cup of hot cocoa.

Often I make hot cocoa from scratch using the recipe linked above, but it is nice to have a mix on hand too. Lately I've been using the Hot Cocoa Mix recipe at the Hillbilly Housewife website. I mix all the ingredients in the food processor, and it comes out a nice fine powder. I store mine in a repurposed 22 ounce creamer container. One batch fits perfectly in it, and it is easy to pour out of the top to make hot chocolate, or to add to a cup of coffee for mocha.

Winter is here, whether I like it or not. Best to enjoy what I can. You'll find me in front of the fire, curled up on the couch with a warm blanket and a cup of hot chocolate or mocha for the next few months waiting for warmer weather.
